- Frankfort. The city where Southern hospitality meets Bluegrass tradition.
Nestled in a scenic river valley among the rolling hills of Kentucky's famed
Bluegrass region, Frankfort is the state capital of Kentucky. With a city
population of 26,418 (1998 est.) and a county-wide population of 46,588,
Frankfort is one of the smallest state capitals in the union.
In September of 2000, Frankfort was voted by
"Bizjournals.Com" as one of the best places to live in the
nation from a total of 632 small towns. And why not? It offers all of
the advantages and charm of a small town, without compromising the
advantages of a large city. Centrally located between Louisville (about
a 45 minute drive via I-64) and Lexington (about a 25 minute drive, also
via I-64), Frankfort features an infrastructure that has attracted such
businesses as Topy
Corporation, Federal
Express, Buffalo Trace
Distillery, Honeywell, Ohi-America and Jim Beam
Distillery, just to name
a few.
As the state capital, Frankfort is steeped in rich
history. Bibb lettuce was developed here by John Bibb. Simon Kenton
pleaded for tax relief here (state government? Hello....Anyone? Anyone?
Hello? Anyone from state government reading here?), Henry Clay practiced
oratory and Aaron Burr was first accused of treason here (Just some
useless trivia for you to digest). You can still tour many
historic homes here, many dating over 200 years old. You can also tour
both the 'old' state capital, restored to it's pre-Civil War condition,
as well as the 'new' Capital, built in 1905 and still in use today. |
